What is Flock?

There are many, quite polarised opinions on what and how cool is Flock.

There are people saying it is the Next Big Thing (tm) and there are others who say it is not worth the hype. It is probably too early to tell - Flock is still raw.

Atrus writes - Flock is just a bunch of extensions:

" Flock =? theme + foxylicious + flickrfox + Deepest Sender

Granted, Firefox itself is mostly glue between various parts of Gecko and extensions ...
Speaking of Firefox, I'm disappointed by two of the big features for 1.5: <canvas> and SVG. "

Daniel thinks along the same lines:

" Personally, I'd love to be able to lay hands on all of the kick @ss features as regular extensions to firefox as opposed to having to get the Flock browser. "

So it is a sum of extensions. But maybe that is what people need?

Miss Rogue - " An extension? That's what I put in my hair. As a halfling (member of the technically clueless, but love the idea of it), I am a bit afraid of extensions. Give me the package or go away. "

There are valueble things in Flock, but those are not necessarily the ones that are most talked about. One of them is search. Benja comments :

" That the search field searches the recent history (and favorites) was the one thing I really liked about Flock, OTOH. "

That summarises what people are saying about Flock.

P.S. Flock does not work with b2evolution. :(

Flock definitely has some advantages over your average collection of extensions. The biggest is that it's actively maintained by a dedicated team. They also don't have to worry about compatability between various versions of Firefox and the Mozilla Suite.

The binary bundling is convenient for end-users, but it also means they have a separate release and testing cycle. On the other hand, I doubt this will be a big deal unless they make changes to the various Gecko components and have to merge patches (in addition to loading their own). Glancing at the file list, it seems they've mostly made additions so this isn't an issue at the moment.
